You know what they say: Practice makes perfect. But what if you don't necessarily know how to practice? No need to fear! Here are 4 writing exercises to get your creative juices flowing.
1. Rewrite a story
Most of us have read a story and wished it had gone a little bit differently. From one scene to the ending, there's always something that we wanted to change. If you're going to change it, then change it! When doing this, make sure you don't make any drastic character changes or unrealistic plot holes. Even if you are changing it, try to keep the story as close to its original form and structure as possible.
2. Writing prompts
When I'm stuck and can't think of an idea, I immediately go to the thousands of writing prompts online. They range from tragedies to intense spaceship battle scenes. There are prompts for every kind of story (you may have to look a little harder for certain types of stories). Here are a few websites you can use to practice with.
3. Write a scene in another perspective
Ever wondered another's character's perspective in a particular scene or story? Write it! This practice requires you to analyze the scene carefully, think about what their reaction would be, and consider how it affected that character.
4. Alphabet Writing Exercise
Want a super-challenging exercise? Try the Alphabet writing exercise. The idea of it is to go in the order of the alphabet with the first letter of every sentence. For example:
As usual, Kyle was late for another date. Brianna was fuming with anger. Choosing between his friends and his girlfriend wasn't a concept that Kyle struggled with. Did he forget, or did he not care? Either way, Briana was left with the short end of the stick.
And so on.
P.S. Good luck with the letters Q, X, and Z
