4 Ways to Get a Story Idea

Creating an idea is the first step to story writing, but what do you do when you don't have a plan? How can you write a story without an idea? No need to fret if you are stuck. Try out these 4 steps to idea forming, and you'll be writing in no time.

1. Ask your audience

The best way to please your audience is to write what they want to read. And it doesn't necessarily have to be a vast audience, but maybe an individual who is in or "fits" your target audience.

2. Pull ideas from real experiences and real people

This concept can work in several forms of writing. In fiction writing, you can write about actual experiences, but change them a bit to fit a specific plotline. If you're stuck on a character, use someone you know. It can be a friend, family member, coworker, celebrity, you name it. Just remember to change their names (or don't).

3. Eavesdrop

I also explained this in my 7 Tips on Character Building, but listen in on a conversation or someone talking on the phone. Listening to the middle of a gives you in slight glimmer into someone's life, but not enough to write an entire life story. Write them down and turn them in an idea.

4. Use what you come up with

We can easily get discouraged when our idea doesn't work out as planned, but don't give up on it. Even if you feel like it's strange, keep working with it. You never know what story about a young wizard being tracked down by a pale bald dude with no nose will turn in to. NO IDEA IS A STUPID IDEA!

I hope that you found this week's post in good health. I wish the best of luck to you in your writing. If you have any questions or comments, leave it down below, and please look forward to next week's post!
