2 Ways to See Your Story in a Different Perspective

After completing my short story, I was told by my professor to think about how the story would change if I started and ended it in a different scene. Where exactly would that be? Would the story be more or less effective? After giving it serious thought and rewiring the plot, I realized that this changed the details and structure of the story significantly.

  • Changing the beginning scene

For example, if your story starts with the initiating event, the event that triggers the conflict of the story, try starting a little bit beforehand. It gives the reader an idea of the setting and provides a sliver of backstory. You can even start it right after the initiating event for suspense, but not too much. You don't want to confuse your reader.

  • Changing the ending scene

You could come up with several story endings without having to alter any previous parts. When changing the last scene, be careful, especially if you take that it in the opposite direction. One thing that I would stray away from is building your story with drama and emotion, only to have it go nowhere in the end.

This week's post was shorter than my previous ones, but I hope that you found it in good health. I wish the best of luck to you in your writing. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave it down below and please look forward to next week's post! Also, let me know if any of these tips helped you in any way.
