I am currently struggling with writer's block as I present this blog to you today. As you can see/read, it's very common. But, I eventually overcame it, and I am ready to give you 5 tips on how you can overcome writer's block as well!
Writer’s block is the condition of being unable to think of what to write or how to proceed with writing.
1. Write for yourself
As your intentions for writing could be to publish it one day, the pressure to be perfect can sometimes be too much to handle and stump you. The best way to solve that is to stop writing for others and write for yourself. Putting your project in the headspace of the author can create some fantastic ideas. You can start by brainstorming another story or continue where you left off.
2. Don't wait until you get inspired
Inspiration surely helps to get into that creative flow, but who knows how long it can take for inspiration to hit? It can take hours to months, and waiting that long to write is absurd. Start getting in the habit of writing even when you don’t feel like it, and you just might get inspired.
3. Remove all distractions
I know how tempting it is to check if Ariana Grande posted on Twitter about her next album, but Ariana isn’t going to help with character development. Get rid of all distractions, such as your phone, iPad, and little things on your desk (yes, a sharpie and some sticky pads can be very distracting). There are even a few apps you can download to stay focused like Forest.
4. Don’t start at the beginning
Of course, you’re going to need a beginning, but how can you write a story without knowing where it will go (Actually, some people can do that, and I applaud them)? Start from the middle or work your way from the end. It’s much more interesting to think about how your characters ended up in a situation rather than putting them there first.
5. Storyboard
For the artists out there, this tip is perfect for you. If you’re stuck on visual details, draw it out. It doesn’t have to be a Picasso masterpiece; you can even do stick figures. Looking at your scene can aid in creating the visual elements of writing. In other words, it helps to make your readers see what you see.
